PALURA (AP) —The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday will begin to take action against hair loss treatments that contain a prescription drug that could be used to treat high blood pressure and other diseases that affect blood vessels, the FDA said in a statement.

The FDA’s announcement comes after a review of more than 200 cases of hair loss found that most of the drugs were linked to increased hair growth, according to the FDA.
The drugs include finasteride, a drug used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, the drug’s label said. It also contains minoxidil, which is used for hair loss.
The FDA said that more than 2,400 people have been prescribed the drugs for hair loss, and it will review them.
“This review will ensure the safety of the drug,” said Scott Smith, assistant director for the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “This review will ensure that these drugs are safe for long-term use and we will work with the FDA to make sure that they are safe for long-term use.”
